The largest cellco in Bangladesh by subscribers and revenues, GrameenPhone (GP), has posted an 81% year-on-year rise in net profits in the three months ended 31 March 2012, reporting BDT5.2 billion (USD62.5 million) compared to BDT2.9 billion in 1Q11, attributing the gain to an efficiency drive alongside lower currency depreciation expenses. Telenor subsidiary GP’s revenues climbed by 12% y-o-y to BDT23.2 billion in Q1 2012, as it added 1.1 million net new GSM subscribers in three months to bring its total to 37.6 million at the end of March (up from just below 32 million a year earlier).
